Begging

Oh mom, hey mom, please get me that
I need it, I want it, PLEASE.
The begging game has just begun
I’ve fallen to my knees.

Oh can’t you buy this one great toy
I’ll never ask for more.
See, I just need this one small thing
Before we leave the store.

Oh Pleeeeese, I just must have it.
No wait, don’t go, come on.
I’ll do whatever you tell me to
Just buy it before it’s gone.

Oh no, my plan is not working.
I’m having no effect.
You are the meanest Mom I know.
They should charge you with neglect.

I drop my legs, you grab my arm
And pull me through the door.
I’ve lost this round but you just wait
I plan to win the war.

‘Cause next time that I go shopping
I’m gonna go with Dad.
He’s way more sweet and much more kind
And he hates when I feel sad.

Then I’ll tell dad that I really want
This special thing from you.
And he’ll buy it and hand it to me.
See, that’s what my dad likes to do.

Yes mom is tough, she makes the rules
Dad bends them once again.
Mom may be mad when we get home
But I got my toy…..I win!

Advice

Parents, just love your children
As they are, it’s as simple as that.
Don’t try to make them something they’re not
Don’t care if they’re skinny or fat.
Or full of life or lazy
Or tall or short or smart.
The only thing kids want from you
Is to love them with all your heart.

Growing Old

My Grandpa once owned a business
He was chairman of the board.
But now he just sits quietly
As one of a growing hoard

Of people who are awaiting
The next thing they’re to do.
Breakfast is a ten o’clock
Arts and crafts at two.

An afternoon activity
A movie or pleasant talk.
When it’s nice, he goes outside
For a slow and peaceful walk.

“Once I held sway whenever I spoke.
I dazzled with brilliance and told a great joke.
I came out on top, in business and life.
I had a great future, a wonderful wife.”

He’s in here but he is slipping
Quickly and oh so far.
You’ve come to say hello to him
But he may not know who you are.

He’d hate it if you felt sorry
For what he now must bear.
See, he once lived a fabulous life
His hand’s been more than fair.

Please do come back for a visit
He has good days and bad.
He just may spark and be himself
And then you will be glad

That you have made the effort
To come and say hello.
Cause grandpa’s still inside here
That’s what you need to know.

New Foods

Sushi, tacos, salmon, peas
I am not a fan of these.
Lamb chops, cole slaw, chili, corn
Not a bite since I was born.

New food scares me
Makes me quiver.
I would die
‘for I’d eat liver.

Pasta, hot dogs, ice cream, cake.
These are foods my mouth can take.
Keep your new foods, please enjoy.
I’ll just stay a plain food boy.

Understanding

I know you think I’m listening
When I’m smiling up at you.
I nod my head and focus hard
So you think it is true

That I process information
And get what you say to me.
But all I’m hearing in my head
Is la la la la lee.

I’m singing songs and rapping
‘Bout things I’ve heard before.
The stuff you hope I’ll understand
Is just a total bore.

I pray that you’ll stop talking.
Oh please, just let me be.
But ’till that time I smile at you
And la la la la lee.

Being Present

People looking at their phones
Earbuds in their ears.
Laptops at the ready
No one even hears.

All the sounds around them.
The birds, the cars, the talk.
No one pays attention.
They’re texting when they walk.

Put down your stuff, turn it off.
Right now, step away.
See the world around you.
Try it for today.

If you are just more present
In what is happening now.
You surely won’t regret it
‘Cause the world is one big WOW!

Growing up

The truth is my youth is over.
When did it slip away?
Don’t really know when I got old.
Can’t point to a single day.

When I knew yep, I’m a grown-up.
My toys are gone for good.
I’ve got responsibilities.
It’s clearly understood.

That grown-ups must be practical;
Mature. steadfast, and strong.
You’re the people your friends  run to
When the world’s gone awfully wrong.

You’re a college grad, a neighbor.
A boss, employee, a friend.
You might not always feel grown-up
You may have to pretend

That you know what you are doing.
You get what life’s about.
If you should stumble as you go,
Your shrink will help you out.
